Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen lies at altitude of 600 metres above sea level at the foot of two horn-shaped mountains, thus giving name to Chefchaouen. With its adjoining houses on the hillside, Chefchaouen is one of the most picturesque towns in Morocco. With it's quiet streets and friendly residence, it radiates both tranquility and mystery.

 



Ibn Moulay Rachid, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, founded the city in the 15th century near the tomb of Moulay Abdessalam, the patron saint of Djebalistam who was said to possess supernatural powers. This holy city, with many moskeeën offered a safe haven for Andalusian Muslims and Jews who were fleeing from the Spanish Catholic kings of the time.
The Medina consists of numerous small alleys and pathways. Throughout the medina are workshops where weavers carried out their work, and still do to this day.

The square Uta el-Hammam has several terraces with wonderful views of the impressive Kasbah. The Berbers, farmers from the alpine meadows, often spent the night here before they worked on the market the following day.
